Big Jubilee Picnic goes craft crazy in build up to big day

With Northampton's Town & County Big Jubilee Picnic all set for Sunday 3 June, a series of FREE craft workshops to get people in the mood for the event will be held at the Guildhall throughout May.

The free 'Crafternoons' will be fun workshops where you can learn how to make anything from a fabulous picnic blanket, home-made bunting, a corgi doggy bag and even crochet crowns for children.

The workshop leaders and event coordinators are also planning to build excitement through a new blog at www.bigjubileepicnic.com where you can find out more details about the workshops and the main event.

It's all part of the preparations and build up to the Big Jubilee Picnic which is being organised by Northampton Borough Council and Northamptonshire County Council and hosted by HM Lord Lieutenant of Northamptonshire Lady Juliet Townsend LVO. The Big Picnic is the main event in Northamptonshire to celebrate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee and will take place in historic Delapre Park on Sunday 3 June from 12noon to 6pm.

'Crafternoon' details as follows:

Thursday 3 & 10 May - 11am to 3pm
Cupcakes & Coronets Picnic Quilt workshop
In this two-session workshop, Anna Thorpe and Tamsyn Payne will show you the basics of big-block quilting and stencilling to help you make a picnic blanket to be proud of.

Thursday 17 May - 11am to 3pm
The Big Jubilee Craftacular
Create your perfect picnic accessories and the finishing touches to your outfit including cake stands, corgi doggy bag, Pom 'pomp' necklace, bluebird headband, crochet crowns for kids, and home-made bunting.

Thursday 31 May - 11am to 3pm
First-Class Floral Display
Help Helen Senogles from the White Petal Workshop create a huge planted show-stopper in the shape of a postage stamp ready for the big day. The plants will form the silhouette of the Queen. A great opportunity to hone your gardening skills.

All of the workshops are free but you do need to book in advance. Reserve your place online at www.wegottickets.co.uk or pop into The Most Marvellous Place to Shop on Abington Square, Kettering Road, Northampton NN1 4AH. A few materials may be required - please check when you book.

Councillor Brandon Eldred, Northampton Borough Council cabinet member for community engagement, said: "The Big Jubilee Picnic is going to be a great day out and its vintage theme will set the scene for celebrating the Queen's 60-year reign. We really want people to enjoy the entertainment on offer and get into the spirit by bringing Jubilee-themed picnics and dressing up in vintage or Jubilee outfits.

"That's where the 'Crafternoons' come in. We're trying to help people prepare for and get excited about the big day. Whether it's making your own picnic blanket, cake stand or making an accessory, the craft workshops are open to everyone and I'd encourage people to book a free place now."
