Princess Benedikte of Denmark to visit Northampton

Her Royal Highness Princess Benedikte of Denmark is to visit Northampton on Wednesday 1 August to mark the strong trade links between her country and the town. HRH Princess Benedikte opened the Carlsberg brewery in Northampton - the first outside its homeland of Denmark - in 1974 and almost 40 years on, she is to be welcomed back to mark both the historic connections and the future economic partnership.

The visit will begin with a reception at Northampton Museum and Art Gallery, where Her Royal Highness will view the wedding shoes worn by Queen Victoria, her great-great-grandmother, as well as the rest of the historic shoe collection.  Following this, HRH Princess Benedikte will move to the Guildhall, where she will see the two stone murals at either side of the entrance to the building. These depict the Danish invasion of Northampton in the 9th century and the arrival of HRH Princess Alexandra of Denmark in 1863 to marry the heir to the throne, the future King Edward V11.

Her Royal Highness will then visit the Northampton Alive exhibition, showcasing all of Northampton’s key regeneration projects, including the expansion of the Carlsberg UK bottling plant, before leaving for a tour of the brewery itself.

Cllr David Mackintosh, Leader of Northampton Borough Council, said:  "It will be an enormous pleasure to welcome HRH Princess Benedikte to Northampton as recognition of the enduring historic and trade links we share with Denmark. "Northampton is home to a number of Danish companies, foremost among them Carlsberg, which is increasing its investment in the town and which we hope will act as a catalyst for the growth of the Enterprise Zone.  Danish businesses have a solid base here and we are keen to encourage even bolder and more significant ties with the country and its industries.  "Northampton has been a platform for success for Carlsberg UK and I am keen to raise our profile with other Danish businesses and to encourage further investment.”

Since HRH Princess Benedikte opened the Bridge Street site in 1974, the brewery has undergone immense change. Today, over one billion pints of beer are brewed every year, the canning and kegging capabilities have been improved, and Carlsberg UK is currently embarking on a £40m expansion programme to build a new bottling line and create up to 60 jobs in Northampton.
